Prototype Description:
The NSC 5810 cuft Plastic Pellet Hopper Cars are commonly seen transporting plastic pellets all over North America. These cars can be seen regularly in packs or traveling singly in mixed freight trains throughout North America going from Producers to Distributors. NSC introduced its modern pellet hopper design with two 5,800 cubic- foot prototypes built in 1982. The first of the production hoppers were still 100 – ton cars (the gross rail limit was 263,000 pounds until 1995) and had volumes of either 5,810 or 5,847 cubic feet. When the gross rail limit was raised to 286,000 pounds (normal loading capacity of 110 tons) the position of the slope sheets was decreased a few degree to raise the volume to 6,245 cubic feet. Though they have continued to manufacture both 5,810 and 5,847 cars. The 5,810 cubic foot hopper has ten 20-inch hatches which includes. Four of these includes the “butterfly” cover (one per compartment) which allows the cars to unload without opening a hatch over each section. This decreases the chances and rain/dust to pollute the product. Lastly, one of the easiest ways to tell the 5,810s apart from almost any other hoppers out there is that their brake rods travel above the left sidesill from truck to truck. Note: this was only on the ealry versions of the car. The NSC 5,847s and 6,200 all have their brake rods running inside the left sidesill.
